About the Project


Project Background

The municipalities of Berat, Kuçovë, Ura Vajgurore, Poliçan and Skrapar of the Berat Qark are implementing an Integrated Waste Management Project funded by Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO, supported by INFRASTRUKTUR & UMWELT, in consortium with SEHLHOFF and FLAG.
The Solid Waste Management Project is designed to be implemented in a two-step consecutive approach: The present Project phase I provides technical assistance, advisory services and capacity development services while the envisaged subsequent Project II shall focus on the realization of regional investment measures and the required institutional support for the operation of the regional investment measures.
The project supports implementation of key national priorities and policies. It is designed to provide for advanced waste management solutions, based on the concepts and standards outlined in the national waste management strategy and Masterplan, in line with EU accession roadmap.

Overall project objective

The Project contributes to improved quality, reliability and sustainability of waste management services in the Berat Region and reduced negative environmental impacts. It will address immediate short remediation needs and will lay the basis for future regional infrastructure investments.

The project starts with an Inception Phase and consists of four project components:

  • Institutional Strengthening (Advisory Services and Capacity Development)
  • Preparation of Local and Regional Plans on Integrated Waste Management and Feasibility Study aiming at future regional investment measures
  • Awareness Raising and Public Information
  • Design and Implementation of Short-Term Measures


Furthermore, the project has supported the municipalities and Berat Region in preparing the Local and Regional Plans on IWM, taking into account all elements of municipal SWM as an integrative system. Based on these plans, a Feasibility Study will be carried out as a basis for future regional investment measures, to be realized within the envisaged, subsequent Project Phase II.
